Cover Songs

Some songs are so good they deserve to be heard again and again. Too bad they never play those type of songs on the radio. And some songs sound pretty good as originals, and pretty fantastic when another artist covers it. These are our Top 5 cover songs. The usual Tuesday (we publish these a day later, maybe more) guest appearance by Marc.

This is a long post, so read on after the jump...

We enjoyed making this list, but not as much as David Bowie and Mick Jagger enjoyed each other's company.

Wes
1. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower

Amazing what someone who can actually sing can do to a Dylan song.

2. Joe Cocker - With a Little Help From My Friends

"Better than the Beatles" is a high bar to leap over.  Joe Cocker did it.

3. Johnny Cash - Hurt

Quite simply one of Cash's best songs.

4. Tool - No Quarter

When Tool covers Led Zeppelin, results may vary between "awesome" and "really awesome."

5. Sean Combs - Kashmir

Wes says that the Saturday Night Live version is really good.  I can't find a video of it, but we've found that Wes speaks, you listen, so this must be good.

Dave
1. Johnny Cash - Hurt
2. Manic Street Preachers - Suicide Is Painless

Masterful.

3. Tool - No Quarter
4. Gary Jules - Mad World

Do people even remember the Tears for Fears version after hearing this?

5. Moby - New Dawn Fades

Ian Curtis sang it better, but Moby's textures give it new life.

Tim
1. Johnny Cash - Hurt
2. Metallica - Turn the Page

Lars Ulrich said this song "had James Hetfield all over it." We agree.

3. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
4. Orgy - Blue Monday

Shit band. Great cover.

5. Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night

If anyone ever says Cobain couldn't sing, just show them this.

Marc
1. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
2. The Beatles - Twist and Shout

This song has been covered by a lot of bands, but no one did it like the Beatles did.

3. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground

That bass line just sucks you in.

4. Johnny Cash - Hurt
5. Hi-Standard - California Dreamin'

Apparently this version is mistaken for being done by Pennywise.  Which is good because Pennywise are from California, they don't really need to dream about it.
